now over 24 hours without power or heat, can see our breath in the house, we have fled to a motel - all three humans and all four cats in a single room. the power company was working their slow way up the hill but there are at least 40 trees down in just our neighborhood so we can't anticipate when we'll be back home. at least we have internet and we're able to call our families to let them know we're safe.

Internet in 2023:
Tumblr media
Me in 2023: Can’t believe we had a modern day news story that was so closely aligned with a great tragedy of the past. Good thing that will never happen again.
Internet in 2024:
Tumblr media
Me in 2024: …I’ll just keep my mouth shut from now on.

1st Snow Day of 2024
Well, that didn’t take long. 14 days into the new year and it’s already snowing. I don’t think they’re overreacting yet and calling this the Snowpocalypse of 2024, but I’m sure if given time, they’ll give some kind of name to this particular wintery weather event. All I know is that my office is closed, so I am forced to stay home and sleep in. That time I joked about having a snow day to catch…

schools finally reopened today and it was the first time i've really walked through the neighborhood since treemageddon hit. first of all the whole place smells like a christmas tree massacre because it's mostly firs and pines around here and the streets are literally 3 inches deep with debris in some places. second, now that crews are starting to remove some of the bigger trees you can really see how much structural damage was done. i saw two houses next to each other who each have tarped roofs where the same tree got them both. the enormous pine that fell across the main road nicked my neighbor's little address sign that's 3ft from their front window - holy shit that was close. it was in the corner between two lots across the street, and somehow all three houses came through intact, and the other tree it pulled down seems to have gotten stuck about halfway through its fall.
i haven't gone around the full loop of the main road but even just the section i saw today was ridiculous. has this been on the news elsewhere in the country??

having now been in a position where it's like 4° outside with no power/heat and only the body warmth of my husband to protect me from freezing to death, i now understand why sharing a bed in a snow storm is a fanfic trope staple.

so the county has contracted a bunch of arborists to assess the damage from county-maintained trees that have fallen in the storm and today was finally our turn. the good news is that none of the trees are in imminent danger of crushing our house; even the one that's slowly sinking toward our roof is close enough and supported-enough by the other trees that it can't gain enough momentum to crush anything. the less-good news (but still pretty good because it means we're not in danger) is that this puts our house at a lower priority so it will be days if not weeks before they can get a crew out do deal with it. making our backyard a terrifying place to be for now.
the actual bad news is that the one tree that fell sideways also seriously disturbed the guy next to it, and he is now teetering dangerously and will likely come down next. that tree is sometimes home to the owl so that's a serious bummer.
we've got a lot of homeless squirrels right now.

the storm took down:
one (1) very big tall tree straight from the root ball, which tipped sideways and is now threatening three (3) other trees and the house of the neighbors to our left.
half (1/2) of another very tall tree that snapped off above a split (the other half broke off last year and took out another entire tree on the way down), which landed on top of the tree above and is not helping the situation.
one (1) absolutely massive tree that was caught by three or four (3-4) others and is still slowly descending between our house and the neighbors on the right, but mostly ours. it was 10ft above our roof yesterday, 5 today. the supporting trees are struggling and now touching our deck.
it's like this all over the city and tree crews can't keep up with the damage.
the greenspace behind our house is going to be much less green, which will only damage the health of the little forest more, leading to more trees falling. holes in the canopy are terrible for fir trees, which rely on each other's intertwined root systems for health and stability. the space has been protected since this development was built (1970s) but i don't know how much longer it will survive.
we are very lucky that none of these fell backwards onto the other side of the greenspace, where they would have obliterated our neighbors down the hill. one of kiddo's friends has a tree straight through their house (no injuries).
fucking climate change, man. this shit is horrifying.
